    About Shibori:

Shibori is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that dates back over a thousand years. It’s most closely associated with deep indigo blues, but the real magic isn’t the colour, it’s the process.

At its core, Shibori is about resistance dyeing. Parts of the fabric are deliberately bound, folded, twisted, or compressed so that when it’s dyed, some areas resist the colour. The result? Those beautifully organic, almost hypnotic patterns that feel both structured and completely unpredictable.

    Why it feels so distinctive

Unlike standard printing, Shibori patterns aren’t perfectly repeated. Each piece carries slight variations, which is exactly the point. It’s a blend of control and chance, where the maker guides the outcome but never fully dictates it. Think of it as design with a bit of poetry baked in.

    Common Shibori techniques

    • Kanoko – the closest to classic tie-dye, where fabric is bound in small sections
    • Itajime – folding fabric and clamping it between shapes for geometric patterns
    • Arashi – wrapping fabric around a pole and binding it to create diagonal, rain-like streaks
    • Nui – stitching patterns into fabric before dyeing, then pulling the threads tight

    The deeper meaning

Shibori isn’t just decorative, it’s tied to ideas of mindfulness, patience, and imperfection. The process takes time, and the results can’t be rushed or fully controlled. That’s why it’s often associated with reflection and calm and you quite literally have to slow down to create it.
